    argvee I also have no degree, and I remember in the 90s it was common to find people without CS degrees that wanted to build software. That changed with the dotcom boom, where the schools switched focus from Knuth to Java.

      argvee It was super common for people to drop out of uni during internships at Microsoft, when people found out how much more and faster you could learn in the right environment. Get paid instead of debt! Microsoft also paid tuition later if you wanted to pick up that paper.

      argvee The piece of paper is a good foot in the door but not everything you need to excel. Anecdotally at Amazon, 30% of principal engineers (L7) don’t have a CS degree, but compare that to less than 5% of L4s...
