          1. Hey other nerds: Byron Cook is an automated reasoning scientist at AWS, and he talks about how he uses Amazon culture tools to improve his application of formal methods:  m.youtube.com/watch?v=g-DH_b5bFd4 1/ byroncook/1458081939982782471

Amazon can feel really cult-like with the heavy reliance on LPs and related tools, but business values *can* help focus tech decisions. This happens when there is clear mapping of business values -> culture values -> decision making. 2/

Working Backwards (WB) is another a tool he uses. It is most consistently used by design teams for retail. No one is required to use it, but there is ample internal documentation, examples, and workshops. 3/

The core purpose of WB is really a formalization of how to get at what’s important. And at Amazon that is almost always about getting to customer impact. That makes it flexible and compelling for non-designers, too. 4/

But working backwards is really predicated on the customer obsession LP at Amazon. If you have another predicate for defining importance, then the tool would have to be rejiggered for that. 5/

For me, the cool part about Byron’s talk, is how he used LPs to understand what is important. And once he had that salience, he realized how he could break out of his nerd silo and increase his impact for his domain specialty. I love breaking silos. 6/
