Great take about setting Mastodon expectations. 🎉 When buying cheese, you can’t expect Cheddar taste when getting Gouda. Even if they look and cost mostly the same. zerornella/1589170120970350592

Endless reasons to doom scroll. Only 3 years in and I swear this decade has already rewired my amygdala and adrenals. Constant surprises and rug pulls. We only have so many spoons.

TIL: Thermocline He pretty explains what happened to me with FB. After 2016, trust just started to plummet, but I still doom scrolled out of habit. Until I just couldn’t do it. garius/1588115310124539904

Fun read. I hadn’t thought much about how subscriptions are priced. LinkedIn is both free and expensive. So I see how his ideas could work for twitter. Patticus/1587848775019778049

Nurture curiosity for motivation (not fear of imperfection). Software engineering requires perpetual self-teaching these days, so we are all often clueless. RailsGirlsSoC creates safe spaces where it's fun to learn. #womenintech #WomenWhoCode ZekeAranyLucas/1586414249211228160

One of our most pervasive unconscious behaviors is to take shortcuts. We can’t possibly explore every idea before making decisions. So many biases derive from that. Time is the ultimate constraint. emollick/1586725978528694273

The first rule of Feminist Fight Club is to talk about ffcbook. Kaja found a new future by building software, but she had to find her voice to claim her place. #WomenWhoCode #womenintech

There are useful parallels between building software and building teams. Optimizing people like they are machines is dangerous. Maybe it works at McDonalds, but fails for creative teams that must explore unknown opportunities. Thanks twitchard twitchard.github.io/posts/2022-09-23-system-dynamics-schmystem-dynamics.html

Amazon's writing culture is a famous success tool, but it isn't easily imported. Strong writing targets an audience. Amazon has specific values. Amazon audiences read and decide based on those values. The decision-making culture precedes the writing culture. Mindset > Tool

I read 6 novels in the last 6 weeks for pleasure. It was satisfying to focus on story over utility. The best them was ‘The Golem and the Djinni’ by helenewecker. The title characters had depth and growth. I look forward to the sequel.

Now we get to hear the audio track that goes with one of twitter’s favorite voices. I expect pure randomness mixed with tech insights, but always centered on being a decent human being. sherrod_im/1579983971915825153

They hired her as a PowerPoint designer. Julia Swidron quickly realized that coding the requirements was more fun than transcribing them. After one week with #SwiftUI, I was mostly digging into details of the DSL (kinda like JSX) based on value types (structs) and @resultsbuilder. Throw in generics, inference, overloads, and closures and you get some pretty obscure compiler messages. And I like it. 🧐😜

A week later and I still ponder this blog post by mipsytipsy. Why is hierarchy so pernicious? It’s like kudzu or blackberries. For me, hierarchy is often comforting in teams with “get along” dynamics. It gets toxic (exploitive) fast as “get ahead” incentives are added. mipsytipsy/1573485665718661120

Wow, swift enum is crazy expressive! I am guessing it was designed with opcodes in mind (or similar). Is there another common language that has something like recursive enum?

I know I shouldn’t, but I am building my own task app, just for my wife and I. Every app I tried is too much and not enough. 😂 On the plus side, I am learning SwiftUI. It’s like opinionated WPF. MVVM hits just right!

Work/life balance is about prioritization, BurnoutBroccoli As an individual, know yourself, and prioritize accordingly. As a manager, know the business, and prioritize accordingly. Seems easy, but like communication, never fully solved.
